Our papers at the 10th EUGEO Conference in Vienna

The Austrian Academy of Sciences hosted the 10th EUGEO Conference "Geographies of a Changing Europe" in Vienna between September 8–11, 2025. The head of our department, Ferenc Gyuris, Johannes Mattes (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna), and Norman Henniges (Humboldt University, Berlin) organized two historically-focused sessions for the congress, which investigated geographers and geographical societies in early 20th-century Europe.

The lecturers of our department contributed to the following presentations:

Charles Withers (Edinburgh) & Róbert Győri: Different Visions: Competing Ideas on Geography and Boundaries among British and Hungarian Geographers, 1915–1919

Ferenc Gyuris & Johannes Mattes (Vienna): Geographical Societies in Budapest and Vienna and Their Colonial Agendas before and after World War I

After the session, the participants visited the invaluable Erich Woldan Collection of geographical and cartographical works in the Library of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (see the image below).

The detailed program of the two sessions involving presenters from Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United Kingdom is available HERE and HERE.
